It is often said that consumers are addicted to their travels, their eating habits, modes of transportation, consumption of clothes, electronic devices, entertainment etc.  This SÆT aims to explore these habits in the light of the phenomenon of abstinence: what are current, proposed solutions to abstinence in other areas, e.g. withdrawal from cigarettes, alcohol, gambling or drugs. How is abstinence depicted, represented, and acted out in the arts or in our collective imaginary? What does the market propose for people who more generally want to treat perceived bad habits, by ways of “detoxing” e.g.? What are the aesthetics behind the abstinence industries (nicorette or wellness-businesses e.g.?)  Could insights from these existing practices be transposed to current climate challenges?
